Emma, who dreamed with a passion comparable to those of the novels she devours, finds herself married to a dull country doctor lacking ambition. In the press
With Agnès Limbos stage directing, Marie Delhaye recreates the tragic fate of Madame Bovary in a subtle object theatre and a stage presence steeped in finesse
In terms of revisited classics, the adaptation of Madame Bovary into object theatre by the Karyatides company is a minor miracle of finesse. Within it Flaubert is condensed, it is true. But the essential aspects are rendered in a process involving acting with dolls, silhouettes, a theatre set and an actress handler supported by an astonishing soundtrack of parodic verve
And so we have the masterpiece of French literature joyfully deconsecrated, embodied, on a table, in candlelight, by a pink-cheeked delicate doll, a few plastic cows and stylised figurines
